....It's About Time Someone Said This.....
I shared this at HomeBasedBusinessForums.com in response to someone stating the product wasn't important at all in any way....that the "absolute" best way to build a business was pushing the opportunity and selling yourself. No mention even of the company or it's reputation as a factor.
=============
"Selling" the business opportunity IS about relationships. In other words..."market yourself first". Put another way....your character and integrity.....who you are....your reputation. I agree.
Selling the product on the other hand is wholly seperate from that. And yes the business IS also about the product. No product sales....no income. If the product is trash....no 1st sale...no income. If the product is trash.... no "recrurring" sales....and no residual income.
The product IS important. Marketing the business opportunity and the product are 2 distictly seperate situations/issues. Equally important and diversely approached. For good reason.
You can lead with either....as long as you don't forget the other.
Leading with a quality product which garners customers/partners loyal to the product and therefore the company....builds loyal business partners for the long run. This creates true long term residual income and the freedom we all seek. Along the way those who do become partners are also a more loyal AND active downline. Again for the long haul. Throughout that scenario true relationships are built with a solid foundation. This is the better approach for the long term...albeit slower to build in many cases.
Leading with the opportunity....preverably by "marketing yourself first"....with character and integrity....and coupled with a quality product....is the proper way to apply this approach. The Law of Attraction at it's best.
One without the other (marketing the opportunity with character.....offering a quality product/service) is useless and doomed. Focusing on opportunity alone in your marketing....without a quality product/service to back it up....is building on shaky ground. A house of cards easily blown away by the first little breeze.
Pick one....and do it the right way.
Remember I said.... "You can lead with either....as long as you don't forget the other."
Yep.....neither is more important than the other. But both are definitely important. Ignoring 1 or the other....or denying the import of 1 or the other....is simply foolish.
I should re-emphasize that the instigator of my diatribe was seeing someone state that the product was of no importance at all....in ANY way. Not as the "lead"....or even to be factored into the worth of the business.
Personally I'm a product 1st kind of person. For much of the reasons I stated above. If I'm not moving product/services....and/or folks in my organization aren't moving product/services....no one makes a dime. That's just common business sense. You can't build a walkaway income on recruiting "for the opportunity" alone. That's a side of the coin too often misunderstood or given little notice.
So product IS importnat. Whether you lead with it or not....you still have to sell it.

Happy New Year!
Wow, how refreshing.
It's been some time since I've read something about MLM that was actually true!
Your words are insightful and accurate and the product really does matter. Many years ago after I first achieved MLM success I was approached by 3 big time MLMers.
They pitched me on their company for more than an hour without ever talking about the product. When I asked about it, they said the product doesn't matter.
Our conversation ended soon after that. Thanks for being honest with people and telling it like it really is. I know you're successful by the words you write!
Congrats and keep up the good work.
